As I write this, I can hear my husband getting our baby dressed for bed; their talking is music to my ears. I still can’t believe we have been together for 16 years and it seems like just yesterday, we were two young kids! In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would bring you back to where it all began. I will set the stage…
It is 2001 and I am off to college with my BFF, Aimee. We are going to UL Lafayette and can’t wait to start living the “grown up” life. We went through rush (sorority) the week before and both pledged Phi Mu (LIOB)! It is the first full week of school and all my pledge sisters decided to go out for “Wild Ass Wednesday”, keep in mind, we are in a college town! So we got dressed in our cutest jeans and tank tops, no mid-drift showing 😉 and headed to the most popular bar on the strip (aka the row of bars right by campus). Now keep in mind, when we left for college, our mom’s instilled in us the following rules:
- Don’t let a guy buy you a drink
- Don’t ever put your drink down
- Don’t go to the bathroom alone
So, with those rules in my head, I went out and I was on high alert! I was following my BFF to the patio when out of nowhere a hand grabbed mine and started to pull me from Aimee. I immediately pulled her and she followed me to the bar (momma always said…always stay in pairs)! Anyway, the hands belonged to this very good looking guy! At first, I recognized him but I wasn’t sure from where, so I let it slide. He offered to buy me a drink (ding ding..don’t let the guy buy you a drink), I politely said “no, thank you”, and ordered myself a beer! So we got to talking and I found out he is a cousin to a good friend of mine from my high school, no wonder he looked familiar!
The night continued on and we had so much fun talking and dancing the night away! As we were saying good bye, we realized we had a class together (Sociology) on Tuesday and Thursday. On Thursday morning, I made my way to the building. In my head, I said if this was meant to be he would be waiting outside and low and behold, he was waiting with a coffee in hand!
We have been together ever since, and we have been through our fair share of ups and downs, but one thing remains, our love and respect for each other. He is not only my husband, but he is my Best Friend!
